Things To Do – February 2015

February – the month where some of us are fully enjoying winter in all its splendor, and others of us are counting down the days until spring. Either way, there are some wonderful activities to take advantage of this month, especially for Family Day weekend. So whether you try something new or attend an old favourite, be sure to use this blog post as a springboard to plan out your month!

Tour the Kitchener Market with Chef D: Saturday, Feb. 7, 10-12 pm: Join Chef D as he does some shopping with our vendors downstairs, and then returns to the Marketplace room to prepare the fresh, local ingredients into a delicious dish for you to sample! This class is free, please register here and meet in the Marketplace at 10 a.m.

Get in your groove on the rink – skate to live spinning of mad beats on February 7th & March 7th 2015. Two different DJ perform for each event from 7pm-9pm at the Waterloo Public Square – free hot chocolate and give-aways! Don’t miss a beat!

Family Art Afternoons at the Cambridge Library: Parents and children learn and play together in Family Art Afternoons, where monthly art projects and exhibition tours are lead by experienced local artists, a wide range of art materials are supplied. Join in this month on February 15th, from 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm at Idea Exchange, Queen’s Square in Cambridge.

DSRC is holding workshops for parents and caregivers on Helping Children Navigate the Social World – join either February 19th or 26th from 9:30am-1:30pm. The workshop is free, but registration is required. Please call 519-741-1121 or email postmaster@dscwr.com

Family Day – Fun all Weekend Long!

Winterloo – Waterloo’s Winter Family Festival takes place February 14–16, from 11:00am–4:00pm daily, in Uptown Waterloo. They have everyone’s favourite winter activities – dog sled rides, ice sculpting, 4-on-4 hockey, great art activities at the Button Factory, free public skating, free family movies, and a great Chili cook-off featuring some of Waterloo’s top eateries… there’s something for everyone! Idea Exchange Clemens Mill and Hespeler will be open for Family Day from 12:00pm – 4:00pm (all other locations are closed). From 2:30 -3:30 pm, come to Clemens Mill for some Robot Wars. Build toothbrush robots, paperclip robots, fan-powered robots and more!  Come test out simple robots you can make and have the chance to drive Sparki the tabletop robot who always gets a hole-in-one! At the Hespler location, from 1:00pm-2:00pm come enjoy Music By Jake!  Three-time Parents’ Choice Award winner and Juno nominee Jake’s unforgettable live performance has become a popular favourite at events across Canada. His hilarious, lively and engaging show will enthrall children of all ages – and a few parents too!

The Kitchener Waterloo Art Gallery has a Family Day drop-in from 1pm-4pm on Feb. 16th – all ages welcome, with activities designed for ages 4 – 12 + adult companion. A fun-filled annual celebration for the entire family with activities that kids and kids-at-heart can do together. Explore the exhibitions, make spectacular artwork of your own, listen in on tales told by Kitchener Public Library storytellers, and participate in dramatic play and games.
